Do not allow the starter grip to snap back against the engine.
Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter.
Tiller type: Standard/Pump type:

PRIMING PUMP
Always pull the starter grip briskly. If not pulled briskly, sparks
may fail to jump across the spark plug electrodes, resulting in
failure to start the engine.
Pull the starter grip lightly until resistance is felt, then pull
briskly.
Press the priming pump several times until a fuel flow in the fuel
return tube is visually noticed.
