Service

Have your power tool serviced by a qualified

repair personnel using only identical replacement

parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power

tool is maintained.

When operating a power tool outdoors, use an

outdoor extension cord suitable for outdoor use.

Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the

risk of electric shock.

Additional safety instructions for

soldering irons

WARNING. This tool must be placed on it’s stand when

not in use.
• Ensure this product is always used on a mains circuit

protected by an earth.

• Always wear safety glasses when operating

the soldering iron as solder may spit

• When the soldering iron is not in use, always return

it to its stand

• Always ensure the work area is both well

lit and well-ventilated

• Never leave the soldering iron plugged in

and unattended

• Be sure to always solder on a fire resistant surface
• Never touch the soldering tip while the soldering iron

is plugged in

• Solder contains lead which is a poisonous metal, so

always ensure your hands are washed after using

solder

To use this tool properly, you must observe the safety

regulations, the assembly instructions and the operating

instructions to be found in this Manual. All persons who

cutting devises

Unpacking

Due to modern mass production techniques, it is unlikely

that your GMC Power Tool is faulty or that a part is

missing. If you find anything wrong, do not operate the

tool until the parts have been replaced or the fault has

been rectified. Failure to do so could result in serious

personal injury.

Operation

WARNING.

Before connecting a tool to a power

source, be sure that the voltage supply is the same as

that specified on the nameplate of the tool. A power

source with a voltage greater than that specified for

the tool can result in serious injury to the user, as well

as damage to the tool. If in doubt, do not plug in the

tool. Using a power source with a voltage less than the

nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.

Setting up the iron stand

1. By firmly holding the stand with both hands, press the

centre of the stand in so that it separates itself from

the rest of the stand and bend to approximately 45°

from the base.

Switch on

1. Ensure the soldering iron is resting securely on the

iron stand before plugging in to the power.

2. After switching on the power, allow the tool a few

minutes to heat up to its operating temperature.

Switch off

1. It is highly recommended that the soldering tip is

wiped clean on a damp sponge (not included) after

use to prolong service life and performance.

2. Place the soldering iron securely on its stand. Switch

off the tool at the power switch and unplug the unit.

For safety, please ensure the unit is well minded until

it has entirely cooled down.

Preparing to solder

WARNING.

Always use safety glasses and ensure the

work area is well ventilated to help avoid breathing in

dangerous fumes.
The GMC Soldering Iron is typically used to melt and

apply solder on various surfaces including circuit boards.
1. Before beginning to solder, secure the work piece so

that it does not move and affect your accuracy.
2. Prepare a damp sponge nearby to clean the tip

when required.
3. Melt a small amount of solder onto the tip of the iron

(1). This process is known as ‘tinning’ and will assist

the heat in following from the soldering iron’s tip, to

the solder joint. It is important to do this immediately

with new soldering tips.
3. Ensure that the workpiece and soldering tip are

clean. The workpiece can be cleaned with the use

of a small file or knife blade. It is recommended

that the user wipe clean the soldering tip with a damp

sponge before, during and after soldering. This will

help promote a cleaner and stronger solder joint.

Soldering

1. Hold the soldering iron close to the base of the

handle (5), and just above the flange (4) like a pen.

WARNING.

Never touch the shaft (3) or tip (1) as

temperatures can range up to 400°C.
2. Hold the soldering iron with the tip pressed onto the

workpiece for a few second to allow it to heat up.
3. Slowly feed the solder onto the joint, not the soldering

iron, allowing the solder to melt onto the joint.
4. Once the solder has been applied to the joint, hold

the workpiece still while removing the solder and

soldering iron simultaneously.

NOTE.

A good solder joint will appear smooth and

shiny. If this is not the case, you will need to reheat the

joint and re-apply the solder.

Removing the tip

WARNING.

Do not attempt to remove the tip while the

soldering iron is still hot.
1. To help prevent the tip from bonding to the shaft,

which may cause the heater element to burn out,

it is recommended that the tip (1) be removed after

each use.
2. To remove the tip (1), clamp the soldering iron and

apply two phillips head screwdrivers to the screws

just above the soldering tip (2) and turn anti-

clockwise until the screws are loose and remove

the tip.
