Entering Text 31

Keys

You can enter characters into your phone using the on-screen
portrait or landscape keyboard. In both formats, the keys are
associated with alphabetic letters, special characters, or numbers,
as shown in the following layouts.
From a screen where you can enter text, for example the New
Message screen, hold your phone in an upright position to display
the portrait version of the on-screen QWERTY keyboard.

Rotate your phone counterclockwise to display the landscape
version of the on-screen keyboard.

Based on the default keyboard settings, the first letter of an entry
is capitalized and all consecutive letters are lowercase unless you
touch the Shift key (

) or enter a period. After entering a

character, the cursor automatically advances to the next space.
For more information, refer to “keyboard” on page 70.
For certain fields, such as the New Message To field, a dialer
keyboard is displayed when you touch the 123 key to enter a
recipient’s phone number. For more information, refer to
“Messaging” on page 55.
