Color Test Results

To test the color capability of the printer we used the internal web page to vary the default
PostScript color settings to the native color space of the printer. A color test target was printed
using this native color space in order to create an ICC Profile using a Gretag Macbeth Spectroscan
scanning spectrophotometer and associated color profiling software.

This ICC Profile was compared with a profile commonly used for commercial printing, US
Sheetfed Coated V2, using the 3D graphing capability of ColorThink Pro 3.0. The results shown
below, indicate that the 7450’s color gamut is reasonably close to the commercial printing profile,
although slightly lacking in density, which is typical for toner-based devices compared with offset
lithography. It is clear that the 7450 is designed to work well in an Apple ColorSync workflow.

In addition to this quantitative color measurement of the printer, a number of demanding color
test targets were printed and were visually judged by color experts for quality. The test target on
the following page from the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation is one example.

This target is demanding because it has a variety of shades of gray which must all be produced as
neutral using Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan toner. It also has a variety of skin tones which are very
difficult to reproduce correctly. The 7450 performed very well in producing this and other color
test targets.
