Design Story: Supporting Ergonomic Comfort

Providing better, more effective products to connect
individuals to their work is one of the key goals of the
Thrive Portfolio, whose products include the Ardea
personal light.

Designed by Yves Behar, the Ardea personal light is a
task light inspired by nature with minimal impact on
the environment.

Ardea uses a mini-compact fluorescent 13-watt bulb,
the current standard in energy-efficient lighting.
Compact fluorescent bulbs have a life that’s about
three to four times longer than that of incandescent
bulbs, and use about a quarter of the electricity. The
light temperature of Ardea’s compact fluorescent bulb
is bright white at 3,500 kelvin and uses a 120-volt
magnetic ballast. The light output of the 13-watt
compact fluorescent is 780 lumens—about the same
as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

Herman Miller’s Design Protocol

Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally
includes minimizing the environmental impact of each
of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE)
applies environmentally sensitive design standards to
both new and existing Herman Miller products.

The DfE Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory
compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product
designs in four key areas:
• Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs—

What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and
are they the safest available?

• Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the

end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?

• Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled

content, and more importantly, can the materials be
recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?

• LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the

entire life cycle?

Material Content

Ardea personal light components are constructed
from steel, aluminum, electronics, zinc, and plastic.

Ardea is up to

84 percent recyclable at the end of its

useful life.

It is comprised of

22 percent recycled materials.

This figure breaks down to 14-percent post-consumer
and 8-percent pre-consumer recycled content.

• Die-cast aluminum components are typically made

from more than 95-percent recycled material and
are 100 percent recyclable.
