As the above, when negotiating a turn, the inside wheel needs to turn at a higher rate than the outside
wheel. This is accomplished by adjusting the angle of the tie rod arm. Dana Spicer steer axles must be
set-up depending on wheelbase and track width in order to satisfy the Ackermann Geometry
requirements. The dimensions “G” and “H” (from the figure below, arm offset from KPI and arm length
respectively) control the tie rod arm angle. These dimensions are present in the Engineering Data Sheets
of Dana axle products.
Track
Track is defined as the measured distance between the centers of the tires. This is created by the
combination of steer axle, hubs and tire/wheels. The picture below shows this relationship.
