Pinion Design Changes – RST40, RST41 Series

The ring gear and pinion set in the enclosed box was standardized by design, beginning in April 2005. The pinion shank
will be different from any original pinions for models produced before April 2005.

Shown below are the specific changes as related only to the GEAR/PINION change. If rebuilding a Dana carrier model
RST40 or RST41 using the enclosed gear set and you encounter any problems with re-assembly, double-check your
parts and the notes shown below. Refer to Dana IPL AXIP-0300 located on

PINION DESIGN CHANGE:

RST40 & RST41 models after April 2005 are built with a new design drive pinion that now
has a step design and requires the use of a NEW inner pinion bearing. Do not use the old
Dana part 45460 Inner Pinion Bearing with this gear set – it will not reassemble correctly.

NEW INNER PINION BEARING:

Different

size bearing from original models Made
BEFORE April 2005.

OLD INNER PINION
BEARING:

Spicer #045460
(industry# 72200C) Not
used on models after April
2005.

NOTE 1:

When rebuilding any BEFORE April 2005 RST40 carriers

having either a 3.55 or 3.70 ratio, or replacing any original 3.55 or
3.70 gearing with the NEW DESIGN 3.55 or 3.70 gear sets, the
correct Cage/Cup Assy must be used. The “Pinions” of the NEW
designs gear sets were changed in overall length, which affects
the stack up in these two ratios. To correct this, you must change
the cage and cup assembly. No other ratios are affected.
