3. Application

Most devices are perfectly connectable to the inverter. Respect these few guidelines to ensure a safe use.

Only use devices designed to be connected to the mains (230VAC / 50Hz).

The device’s power output is known and does not exceed the max. load of the inverter.

Do not connect rapid chargers to the inverter with modified output. These devices can be damaged or can

damage the inverter. Connect these devices to an inverter with a pure sinusoidal output (PI150 and PI300).

Switching power supplies (e.g. power supplies for laptops) can be damaged or can damage the inverter. Some

power supplies only operate with a pure sine wave.

VELLEMAN NV cannot be held responsible for damage or data loss in case of an improper use of the device.

4. Remark

On most devices, the power output is mentioned at the back expressed in W (watt). This power output is called the

capacity and is the power needed by the device during normal operation. Make sure this value does not exceed the

inverter’s capacity. In this case, use a more powerful inverter.

Lots of devices need a larger amount of power during the start-up period (switch-on power). This power can be

several times more important than the operating power. You will usually find this phenomenon with devices of the

“inductive” type, like motored devices. A 600W electric drill can easily need 1800W of switch-on power!

With some devices the power will be much higher than the mentioned power. Take a microwave oven as an

example. The operating power is in fact the power needed to cook. The actual operating power is much higher. The

needed power for an electric drill depends on the load onto the drill (drilling through wood will require less power than

drilling through concrete).

Choose your inverter considering these specifications since the inverter has to be able to deliver this kind of power.

Apply the following principle when choosing an inverter:

Multiply the device’s operating power by 3. This value has to be inferior to the continuous (maximum) power

of the inverter.

Operating power of the device x 3 < inverter’s capacity

5. Connection

Follow these guidelines in order to avoid damaging the inverter and the connected device.

Step 1: Install the inverter in the car’s cup holder.

Step 2: Connect the converter plug to the cigarette lighter.

Do not extend the included cable as this can lead to a high voltage loss or cable overheating!
