THE CHEMICAL ELEMENTS

Here’s an overview to help you understand

what’s happening inside your metal–air cell.

O = oxygen

H = hydrogen

O = water

Mg = magnesium

Mg(OH)

2

= magnesium hydroxide

These are the reactions taking place in your metal–air cell.

Main reaction, which releases energy:

Reaction at the anode:

Mg - 2e¯ + 2H2O —> Mg(OH)2 + 2H

+

Reaction at the cathode:

½ O2 + H2O + 2e¯ —> 2OH¯

Overall reaction:

Mg + 2H2O —> Mg(OH)2 + H2
