8 Working with Remote Copy

A Remote Copy feature is now available for you to create and manage both Synchronous or
Periodic Virtual Copies at the RC Group level. In addition, the Remote Copy feature provides a
GUI interface and basic CLI command functionality to register, create, schedule, update and remove
Remote Copy pairings.

HP 3PAR Recovery Manager for VMware software supports VMware Transparent Failover between
multiple servers through synchronized Remote Copy. The existing Remote Copy disaster recovery
functionality compliments a transparent failover setup by including an automatic volume creation
on the secondary array when a primary volume is added to a group. Both the primary and
secondary clusters provide a path to an ESX host virtual volume with the same world-wide-number.
The primary Remote Copy group provides the active path while the secondary Remote Copy group
provides a passive path to targeted virtual volume.

When Virtual Volumes are using Transparent Failover, RMV blocks the local Virtual Volume creation
for Virtual Machines and Datastores while allowing the creation of remote Virtual Copies on Remote
Copy Groups. As a result, when an active path failovers to a different storage system, the virtual
copies become available on either storage systems for restoration.

For more information about establishing Transparent Failover setup, refer to the HP 3PAR Remote
Copy User Guide
.

Use the Admin tool to register and configure Remote Copy Pairs before launching the vCenter
plug-in feature to create a snapshot of your system.

Ensure the following requirements are satisfied before registering a Remote Copy pair:

Remote Copy configuration already exists on the storage systems. Use the HP 3PAR OS CLI
or IMC GUI to create the Remote Copy configuration if they do not exists.

Recovery Manager Software for VMware is already installed on the remote host situated in
a remote site.

Establish IP access to the remote host.

You can configure the Remote Copy volume group for synchronization in one of the following
modes:

synchronous mode

asynchronous periodic mode with replication period value set to zero

CAUTION:

If you set the replication period value to zero, then the Remote Copy

replication is dependent on the RMV scheduler. So you must ensure that the RMV service
is available all the time.

Registering Remote Copy Pairs

1.

Launch Recovery Manager Software for VMware vSphere Admin Tool and click the HP 3PAR
Management Plug-in and Recovery Manager Software for VMware vSphere Admin
Tool

→vCenter Plug-in.

NOTE:

If you have a single RMV server, HP recommends that you register the remote copy

pairs in both directions. If you are using two RMV servers, register each direction just once
on each RMV server.

2.

Under the vCenter Plug-in tab, click Remote Copy Pairs tab.
