Select the desired options from the Backup Method group box.

Online (Hot) backup - The involved database instance must be open for this operation.
The database is put in backup mode before the Virtual Copy is created. After the Virtual
Copy creation is completed, the database is taken out of backup mode.

Offline (Cold) backup - The involved database instance must be shut down normally for
this operation.

Datafile only - The involved database instance must be open for this operation. The
database is put in backup mode before the Virtual Copy is created. After the Virtual Copy
creation is completed, the database is taken out of backup mode. This backup only takes
a Virtual Copy for all datafiles and not for the archive logs. A Virtual Copy created with
this option is only useful when archive logfiles generated during the creation of the Virtual
Copy are also available. You may want to create separate Virtual Copies using the
Archive log destination only option.

Archive log destination only - The involved database instance must be open for this
operation. The database is forced to switch logs before a Virtual Copy of archive logs is
created.

(Optional) Select the Virtual Copy’s Expiration Time and/or Retention Time by selecting the
unit of measure (Days or Hours) and entering a numeric value from 1 to 1,825 (days) or 1 to
43,800 (hours). Deselecting the checkbox indicates there is no expiration and/or retention
time.

Click Next.

(Optional) If you wish to schedule a task for the Virtual Copy, perform the following:

NOTE:

If you are using HP UX; before you can schedule tasks, the system administrator must

add your user name to the relevant permissions file:

/usr/lib/cron/cron.allow

a.

Select Schedule task.

b.

(Optional) Select Email result to recipient when task is finished for Email notification.

NOTE:

In order to receive an Email notification, you must have previously configured

an Email address, as described in

“Configuring Email” (page 103)

.

c.

Select a Start Time from the drop-down list, or enter a start time.

d.

Select a task duration of Hourly, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.

e.

Select the task interval.

f.

Click Finish.

NOTE:

If you are using HP UX, the system might display the following message:

commands will be executed using /usr/bin/sh

This message is a generic warning from the OS and can be ignored.

Setting up a Time-Based Virtual Copy Policy

This feature allows you to set the days or hours that a Virtual Copy is kept relative to the creation
time of a Virtual Copy before it is automatically removed. It also allows you to set the number of
days or hours a Virtual Copy is retained.
