Using Snapshots

A snapshot file system is used to duplicate the contents of a file system at a particular point in
time, much like taking a photographic snapshot. Although files may change in the future, you
have captured the contents of the file at the moment the snapshot was created. This snapshot
copy of your data is read only.
A snapshot file system consists of:

o

a super block - logistical information about the snapshot

o

a bitmap - indicates if block in original file system has changed

o

a blockmap - provides address of data block in snapshot that has a copy of the
original file system block

o

data blocks - copies of original contents of changed file system blocks

Snapshots are managed from the command line, not from the NAS GUI. You have the tools to
create snapshots within OnlineJFS, which is included in HP-UX 11i.

To create a snapshot, use:

mount [-F vxfs] -o snapof=source[,snapsize=size] destination
snap_mount_point

Next, create a mount point for the snapshot:

# mkdir /snapmount

Then, mount the snapshot:

With VxVM (Veritas Volume Manager) included in OnlineJFS:

# mount -F vxfs -o snapof=/dev/dsk/datadg/uservol
/dev/vx/dsk/datadg/snapvol /snapmount

Without VxVM:

# mount -F vxfs -o snapof=/dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s2
/snapmount
