This document contains the recommended procedures installing a Hawkeye Industries Inc. Sucker Rod Shear Coupling.

Tool and Hole Preparation

Coupling Preparation

1.)

Install all downhole equipment per manufacturer’s directions.

2.) Calibrate all tooling and installation equipment, and ensure equipment

is in proper working order.

The Shear coupling can be oriented box-down, or box-up with no

effect on performance. The following is for box-down installation,

and assumes a sucker rod pin connection is looking up. Do not

use a polished rod thread form in the shear coupling box.

1

1.) Remove thread protection from the

box and pin, and ensure both

threads are clear of debris, and are

free from damage and corrosion. If

there is damage or corrosion on the

threads, do not use the shear cou-

pling.

2.) Apply an appropriate and approved

sucker rod thread lubricant to the

coupling threads, taking care to de-

grease the pin shoulder and coupling

face to remove thread lubricant.

1.)

Carefully place the shear coupling box onto the rod pin and start the

first thread by hand.

2.) Use a rod wrench to turn the shear coupling until the box flat and

sucker rod pin shoulder touch.

3.) Use the sucker rod manufacturer’s power tong make up procedure

for final tightening, taking care not to exceed the published maximum

torque rating of the shear coupling.

4.) Carefully place the coupling onto the shear coupling pin and start the

first thread by hand.

5.) Use a rod wrench to turn the coupling until the shear coupling pin

shoulder and coupling face touch.

6.) Use the sucker rod manufacturer’s power tong make up procedure

for final tightening, taking care not to exceed the published maximum

torque rating of the shear coupling.

7.) Carefully insert the sucker rod pin into the coupling and start the first

thread by hand.

8.) Use a rod wrench to turn the shear coupling until the box flat and

sucker rod pin shoulder touch.

9.) Use the sucker rod manufacturer’s power tong make up procedure

for final tightening, taking care not to exceed the published maximum

torque rating of the shear coupling.

Joint Make-Up

1 - 3.)

4 - 6.)

7 - 9.)

Complete

Ensure the shear coupling does not reside in areas of
heavy deviation

Ensure the shear coupling is not in a position to receive re-
versible (cyclic) bending, and is at least one joint above the
pump.

Ensure the shear coupling is not in a position to receive
considerable combined (tension + torsion) loading.
