Automatic transmission
This is the easiest way to send a fax.

If it is not illuminated in green, press ( Fax ).

Load your document.

Dial the fax number you want to call. (See How to dial on page
3-1.)

Press Black Start or Color Start .
Manual transmission
Manual transmission lets you hear the dialing, ringing and
fax-receiving tones while sending a fax.

If it is not illuminated in green, press ( Fax ).

Load your document.

Pick up the handset of the machine (FAX-1840C and
FAX-1940CN)/external phone (MFC-3240C and MFC-3340CN)
and listen for a dial tone.
—OR—
Press Speaker Phone (FAX-1940CN only) or Hook and
listen for a dial tone.

Dial the fax number you want to call.

When you hear the fax tone, press Black Start or Color Start .

If you picked up the handset replace it.
Do not pick up the handset or press Speaker Phone
(FAX-1940CN only) or Hook to listen for a dial tone.
