Situation

Wienerberger AG, whose head offi ce is in Vienna, has 221 plants
in 30 countries, making it the largest manufacturer of bricks in
the world. Its German subsidiary Wienerberger GmbH operates
a total of 20 plants. These include Wienerberger Ziegelindustrie
GmbH in Wefensleben in the State of Saxony-Anhalt which has
been run as a Poroton lining brick plant since 1991. A workforce
of 54 at this site produce high quality Poroton bricks made of
clay for use in the construction industry. Around 1,000 tons of
material are used every day.

Task

The clay which consists of two strata, the upper loam stratum
and the lower shale stratum is extracted from the company’s
own mine. After this it is stored temporarily on the site and then
mixed with external additives from a nearby paper factory and a
nearby power plant and placed in the so-called box feeder. From
the box feeding system the material is transported on conveyor
belts to the production area. There it is placed in mixers and
then formed into the required brick form before being fi red at
very high temperatures to produce Poroton bricks. The brick
gets its striking red color during the fi ring process as a result of
a chemical process. After cooling the bricks are packed on to
pallets, welded in foil and made ready for shipment.
