Abeam - object 90 degrees (

Abaft - a pont on a boat that s aft of another.
Aft - toward the rear or stern of the boat.
Beam - the maxmum wdth of a boat.
Bilge - the lowest part of the hull on the inside where fluids
collect.
Bow - the forward part of a boat.
Bow Eye - bolt wth looped head mounted on extreme forward
part of bow, used for towng or tyng up boat.
Bulkhead - vertcal partton n a boat
Chine - meetng juncture of sde and bottom of boat.
Chock - deck fitting, used as a guide for mooring or anchor
lnes. also, a wedge to stop wheels from rollng.
Cleat - deck fitting with arms or horns to which lines are tied
or made fast.
Cockpit - the open space from whch a boat s operated.
Deck - upper structure whch covers the hull between
gunwales.
Downwind - n the drecton the wnd s blowng toward
Draft - depth of water required to float boat and its propulsion
system.
Fathom - sx feet.
Fenders - rope or plastc peces hung over the sde to protect
the hull from chafing against a dock or another boat.
Freeboard - heght of exposed hull from water lne to deck.
Ground tackle - general term referrng to anchors, anchor
lnes, etc.
Gunwale (pronounced gun'l) - where the hull and deck come
together; the "sdes" of the boat n the cockpt area.
Hatch - an openng n the deck to provde access below.
Head - tolet or tolet area n a boat.
Headroom - vertcal dstance between the deck and cabn or
canopy top.
Helm - steerng and controls console.
Hull - the lower part of a boat beneath the deck and cockpt
that provides buoyancy to float the weight of the craft and its
load.
Keel - the major longtudnal member of a hull; the lowest
external porton of a boat.
Knot - unt of speed n nautcal mles per hour.
Lee - the sde that s sheltered from the wnd.
PFD - Personal Flotaton Devce; lfe jacket or preserver.
Port - term desgnatng left sde of the boat when facng
forward.
Rudder - Movable fixture at the stern used for steering.
Scupper - hole permttng water to dran overboard from deck
or cockpt.
Sheer - curve or sweep of the deck as vewed from the sde.
Snub - to check or tghten a lne suddenly.
Starboard - term desgnatng rght sde of the boat.
Stern - the rear (aft) end of a boat.
Stern drive - outboard unt of an nboard/outboard (I/O) engne
nstallaton.
Stringer - longtudnal members fastened nsde the hull for
addtonal structural strength.
Transom - the rear part of the boat across the back, to whch
the drve unt and swm platform are attached.
Upwind - n the drecton the wnd s blowng from.
Wake - dsturbed water that a boat leaves behnd as a result
of forward moton.
Windward - toward the drecton from whch the wnd s
blowng.
