PROCEDURE

SOIL SAMPLING
Carefully follow the instructions given on pages 43-44 of the LaMotte
Soil Handbook

(1504) to prepare the soil sample.

EXTRACTION
1.

Use a 1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 1 mL of *Acid Extracting
Solution (6361) to the test tube (0701). Add deionized water to
the 15 mL line.

2.

Use the 1.0g spoon (0697) to add 3 grams of soil.

3.

Use the pipet to add 0.5 mL Charcoal Suspension (5638). Cap and
shake for 15 minutes.

4.

Filter, into another test tube (0989), using the funnel (0459) and
filter paper (0465) and collect all of the soil filtrate.

TEST PROCEDURE
1.

Remove the square inner tube and collar from the double tube
(0796).

2.

Use a 1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 2 mL of soil extract to the round
tube.

3.

Use a 1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 2 mL of the *Potassium TPB
Solution (3825). Allow to stand for 5 minutes.

4.

Dilute to the top line with demineralized water. Cap and shake to
mix.

5.

Remove the cap and slowly insert the square tube with the collar.
The square tube will slide up and down through the collar and fill
with liquid.

6.

Viewing from above, adjust the square tube into the turbid solution
until the black dot on its base is obscured. Hold the round tube at
the top to avoid blocking the light. Note the height of the liquid in
the square tube and read the amount of potassium in the soil.
NOTE:

Use test tube brush (0514) to clean tubes thoroughly after

each use.
