*WARNING:

Reagents marked with an * are considered to be potential health

hazards. To view or print a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for these reagents
go to www.lamotte.com. To obtain a printed copy, contact LaMotte by e-mail,
phone or fax.
To order individual reagents or test kit components, use the specified code
number.

To determine if there are any interferences present in the reagents follow
the procedure below, eliminating Steps 2 & 3. If the amount of color
which develops in the reagent blank is greater than zero, subtract this value
from the test results for the actual concentration of formaldehyde.

PRO CE DURE
1.

Fill a clean impinging tube (0933) to the 10 mL line with Distilled
Water (5175PT).

2.

Connect BD Pump (1949) to Midget Impinger.
NOTE:

Make sure the long tube is immersed in the absorbing solution.

3.

Adjust flowmeter to collect air at a rate of 1.0 Lpm. Sample 30
minutes, or until a measurable amount of formaldehyde is absorbed.

4.

At end of sampling period, disconnect impinger and pour contents into
clean 10 mL test tube (0843). Dilute to mark if necessary with distilled
water (5175PT) to replace any liquid lost through evaporation.

5.

Carefully pour 12.5 mL of *Formaldehyde Reagent #1 (6697) into the
12.5 mL test tube (1163). Use the 0.05 g spoon (0696) to add 0.05 g of
*Formaldehyde Reagent #2 (6698). Cap and mix until powder
dissolves. This mixed reagent is stable for one day only.
CAUTION:

*Formaldehyde Reagent #1 is highly poisonous. Read

MSDS before use.

6.

Use a 1 mL pipet (0354) to add 1.0 mL of reagent from Step 5 to the
contents of the 10 mL test tube (0843). Cap and mix.

7.

Use a second pipet to add 1.0 mL of *Formaldehyde Reagent #3
(6699). Cap and mix. Wait 20 minutes.

8.

Insert test tube into Formaldehyde In Air Comparator (6696). Match
sample color to index of color standard. Record the index number.

9.

Use the chart below to convert index reading to a concentration.
Record as ppm Formaldehyde.

NOTES:
1.

The sampling period specified in the directions corresponds to
concentration which may be encountered in ambient air conditions.
High concentrations of pollutants in the atmosphere will require
shorter sampling periods, while low concentrations will require longer
sampling periods.

2.

For applications requiring a high degree of accuracy, an external
flowmeter should be used to verify the flow under actual working
conditions. LaMotte Company can provide certification of the BD
Pump’s flow rate for a modest additional expense.
