WEAK AL KALI SO LU TION
1.

Fill test tube (0970-S) to 10 mL line with weak alkali solution.

2.

Add 3 drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246). Cap and
mix. Solution will turn red.

3.

Fill pipet (0352) with *B-K Alkali Solution B (8363PS). While
gently swirling tube, add *B-K Alkali Solution B one drop at a time
until color changes from red to colorless. Count number of drops
added. Hold pipet vertically.

4.

Add 3 drops of Total Alkalkalinity Indicator (2786). Cap and mix.
If solution turns red, no inactive alkalis are present. If solution
turns blue, proceed to Step 5.

5.

Continue adding *B-K Alkali Solution B (8363PS) one drop at a
time until color changes from blue to pinkish red. Count number of
drops added. Hold pipet vertically.

ACTIVE ALKALINITY:

Multiply number of drops used in Step 3 by

0.005. Record as % Active Alkalinity.

Number of drops used in Step 3 x 0.005 = % Active Alkalinity

INACTIVE ALKALINITY:

Multiply number of drops used in Step 5

by 0.005. Record as % Inactive Alkalinity.

Number of drops used in Step 5 x 0.005 = % Inactive Alkalinity

TOTAL ALKALINITY:

Add the active alkalinity to the inactive

alkalinity. Record as % Total Alkalinity.

% Active Alkalinity + % Inactive Alkalinity = % Total Alkalinity

CAUSTIC CONTENT:

Subtract the inactive alkalinity from the

active alkalinity. Record as % Caustic Content.

% Active Alkalinity - % Inactive Alkalinity = % Caustic Content
