PRO CE DURE

1.

Use graduated cylinder (0455) to measure 50 mL of sample water.
Transfer to 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask (0431).

2. a.

If no sulfite is present, proceed to Step 3.

b.

If sulfite is present, add 1 mL of *Hydrogen Peroxide, 3% (6091).

Mix for 30 seconds.

Add 2 drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246).
a.

If the sample is colorless, add *Sodium Hydroxide, 0.5N (6089)

until a red color appears. Then, add *Sulfuric Acid, 0.5N (6090)
until the red color disappears.
b.

If a red color develops, add *Sulfuric Acid, 0.5N (6090) until red

color disappears.

4.

Use the 0.5 mL pipet (0353) to add 0.5 mL of *Chloride Reagent A
(4069PS-G). Mix. The solution should be yellow.

5.

Fill the automatic buret (0427) with Silver Nitrate, 0.0171N (6168).
While gently swirling the flask, titrate the solution until the yellow
color turns red brown. Record the buret reading in mL.

6.

Calculate the test result as follows:

ppm sodium chloride = 20 (Buret Reading, mL - 0.2 mL)
