1.

Fill the graduated cylinder (0418) to the 50 mL line with sample
water. Transfer to a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask (0431).

2.

Add one Phenolphthalein Tablet (T-2246). If the solution turns
red, P Alkalinity is present; proceed to Step 3. If the solution is
colorless, P Alkalinity is zero; proceed to Step 4.

3.

Fill buret (0427) with *Alkalinity Titration Reagent (4015). While
swirling flask, slowly add *Alkalinity Titration Reagent until red
color disappears. Record buret reading as Value P. Do not refill
buret if determining T Alkalinity.
NOTE:

If chlorine levels greater than 2 ppm are present, the

chlorine should be neutralized before testing for T Alkalinity. Use a
dechlorinating agent, such as 1 drop of 0.1N Sodium Thiosulfate
(6155).

4.

To the same flask add one BCG-MR Indicator Tablet (T-2311).
Solution will turn greenish-blue.

5.

While gently swirling flask, titrate sample with *Alkalinity
Titration Reagent until greenish-blue color changes to pink. Record
buret reading as Value T.

6.

Multiply Value P by 20. Record as ppm P Alkalinity as CaCO

3

.

Value P x 20 = P Alkalinity as ppm CaCO

3

7.

Multiply Value T by 20. Record as ppm T Alkalinity as CaCO

3

.

Value T x 20 = T Alkalinity as CaCO

3

NOTE:

Methyl Orange Indicator (2230) may be used in place of the

BCG-MR Indicator Tablets to run the test for Total Alkalinity. The
color change will be from yellow to orange-red at the endpoint.
