B. TO TAL CHLO RINE
1.

Fill the test tube (0106) to the 10 mL line with a fresh sample.

2.

Add one *Chlorine DPD #4R Tablet (6899), cap tube, and mix to
dissolve tablet.

3.

Insert Chlorine/pH Octa-Slide Bar (3490) into Octa-Slide Viewer
(1100). Match sample color with a pink color standard on the left
side of Octa-Slide Bar. Read results in ppm Total Chlorine.

IRON
1.

Fill test tube (0106) to 5 mL line with sample water.

2.

Add one *Total Iron TesTab (2792). Use tablet crusher (0175) to
crush tablet. Cap and shake vigorously until dissolved.
WAIT 5 MINUTES.

3.

Insert Iron/Silica Octa-Slide Bar (3491) into Octa-Slide Viewer
(1100). Match sample color with a pink iron color standard on the
left side on Octa-Slide Bar. Record results as ppm Total Iron.

SIL I CA
1.

Fill the test tube (0106) to the 5 mL line with sample water.

2.

Add 7 drops of *Silica Reagent #1 (4571), cap and mix by
inverting tube several times.

3.

Add 6 drops of *Silica Reagent #2 (4467), cap and mix. Wait 5
minutes.

4.

Add 6 drops of *Silica Reagent #3 (4468WT), cap and mix. Wait 2
minutes.

5.

Use pipet (0341) to add 2 drops of *Reducing Reagent (6405), cap
and mix. A blue color will develop in ten seconds if silica is
present.

6.

Insert Iron/Silica Octa-Slide Bar (3491) into Octa-Slide Viewer
(1100). Match sample color with a blue color standard on the right
side of Octa-Slide Bar. Read results in ppm Silica.

SAM PLE COL LEC TION
All samples must be collected in clean containers. Care should be
exercised to obtain a representative water sample. On all systems, allow
the water to run until it is as cool as it can get. In addition, on well
systems, allow the well pump to cycle on and off at least twice.
Select a sample source as close to the well, or incoming line, as possible.
Remove any aerator or screens from that sampling location.
For hydrogen sulfide samples, insert a short length of plastic tubing up
into the sample faucet, with the other end leading to the bottom of the
clean container. In this way, air dissipation in the sample will be
minimized.

SAM PLE MEA SURE MENT
All samples are measured in the calibrated test tubes. The test results
can be no better than the procedures used. If the water sample is not
accurately measured, the results will also be inaccurate. Always carefully
measure the sample by filling the test tube so that the bottom of the
curved surface of the liquid just touches the marked line. This is
particularly true for the hardness and alkalinity tests. Good techniques
should be developed to assure accurate measure of the sample.
Always rinse the clean sample tube first with the water to be tested.
Discard this rinse, then, measure the sample for analysis.

SAM PLE DI LU TION
Many times, the contaminant’s concentration is higher than the test
can determine. Dilution procedures are needed to reduce the
concentration within the test range. Even when the concentration is
just less than the largest value of the test, a repeat test should be run on
a diluted sample.
Dilution is readily accomplished with clean equipment and DI water.

USE OF THE OCTA-SLIDE VIEWER
The Octa-Slide Viewer should be held so
non-direct light enters through the back of the
viewer. With sample tube inserted at top, slide
the Octa-Slide bar through the viewer and match
with color standard.
