Message

Application data contained within a LonWorks packet.

LonWorks messages are used to exchange data between

application devices on a L

network. A LonWorks

message includes a message code that identifies the type of

message. The interpretation of the remainder of the

message depends on the message type specified by the

message code. Also called a LonTalk message.

networks to standardize

communication between application devices. This protocol

is defined by the EIA-709.1 standard. Also called the

LonTalk protocol.

System

A set of tools and components for implementing control

networks using the LonWorks protocol.

Message Code

A message type identifier within a LonWorks message. The

message code identifies the message as an application

message, foreign frame message, network variable message,

network management message, or network diagnostic

message.

Message Tag

Input and output ports that devices use to send and receive

LonWorks messages.

Neuron

Chip

A family of VLSI components that implements the

LonWorks protocol. The Neuron Chip can manage I/O

devices and execute user-written application code, or

alternatively be used to create a network interface to a

host processor.

Network Services
Interface (NSI)

See LNS network interface.

Network Variable

High-level objects that application devices use to

communicate with one another. The types, functions, and

number of network variables in each device are

determined by the application code within the device.

Network variable update messages are a special type of

LonWorks message.

PCC-10 PC Card
LonTalk Adapter

The PCC-10 is a type II PC Card (formerly known as

PCMCIA) LNS network interface. It has an on-board

TP/FT-10 transceiver. Other types of transceivers are also

supported by using external interface pods.
