Introduction

The electrical and mechanical components housed inside an actuator can be damaged if not
properly protected against exposure to moisture and chemical attack. The aluminum housings
of Automax

®

electric actuators are dipped in a yellow chromate conversion solution greatly

enhancing the aluminum's ability to withstand corrosion. This process creates a layer of
protection against oxidation and provides a better adhesive surface for the electrostatic paint.
In addition, the majority of internal components have a degree of corrosion protection; by
utilizing either zinc plating or alternative non metalic materials. In order to guarantee the
warranty issued with every actuator, the following procedures must be followed. CAUTION - The
Nema 4,4X (weatherproof) rating is not valid until the unit is properly installed or prepared for
storage. Storage where an actuator shall be mounted on pipelines or duct work is also subject
to the following requirements.

Storage:

1.

Store in a clean, dry, protected facility free from excessive vibration, humidity, and
fluctuating temperatures. Do not store actuator where it can be immersed in water or buried
in snow.

2.

All plastic conduit port plugs shipped with the actuator must be replaced with a sealing pipe
plug or the unit is to be connected to a sealed conduit system. Insure all cover fasteners
are tight.

3.

Preventing temperature changes is the best way to keep condensation from forming inside
sealed actuators. Connect and energize the internal heater and thermostat (if supplied), or
place desiccant inside the unit.

4.

Centura actuators contain permanently lubricated gear trains that do not require
maintenance. However, should it become necessary to refill, use a multi-purpose grease
such as Du Bois Chemicals MPG-2.

Additional Requirements for Long Term Storage (More than 90 days):

5.

The actuator is to be stored off the floor (open skids) and covered with an unsealed dust
cover.

6.

The preferred storage orientation is in the upright position with the mounting pad flat; not
tilted.

7.

Spray all electric contacts with CRC 2-26 or equal to displace moisture and prevent
corrosion. Electronic boards may be ordered from the factory conformal coated for extra
protection. Specify that the unit will be stored and the exposed contacts will also be coated.

8.

Periodically perform a visual inspection to check for moisture and the proper function of any
heat sources.

9.

If possible, physical operation is preferred. Electrically and mechanically rotate the actuator
full cycle. Spray contacts with CRC 2-26. Record all inspections.

10. For storage longer than two (2) years, consult factory.
