ON/OFF

1. POWER UNIT ON with “ON/OFF” button

a) A screen displaying “Victoreen Advanced Survey Meter” will

appear for ~5 seconds

b) If this does not occur, refer to BACK PAGE (“Power/Batteries”)

PROBE INFO

MODEL #: PANCAKE
SERIAL #: 002132
CAL DATE:
CAL CYCLE: 12 MOS.
CAL DUE:
IS PROBE CORRECT?
YES
NO

2. VERIFY PROBE MODEL # is Pancake

Select “YES” with the arrows and press the “SEL” button

a) If “MODEL #” is not Pancake refer to BACK PAGE (“Probe

Selection”)

b) If “CAL DUE” date has passed, contact radiation safety officer

3. ENSURE RATE MODE is in USE (mR/hr)

Once the probe is selected, the normal operating screen is
displayed

a) Only use the “RATE” mode with “mR/hr” units (Note: may

also read “R/hr” for elevated radiation levels as 1R = 1,000
mR
)

b) Verify that the “RATE” mode is in use (denoted by the Rate

Mode Indicator and “mR/hr”)

c) If this is not the case, refer to BACK PAGE (“Mode Selection”)

4. SCAN PATIENT WITH UNIT (as shown)

a) Hold UNIT an inch from patient, with the

BOTTOM of the UNIT facing the patient

b) Survey entire body until a MAXIMUM RATE

reading is identified by visual inspection

c) Record MAXIMUM RATE and Time/Date

If using Patient Tracking Tags, refer to

Triage Guidelines

Maximum RATE

reading (mR/hr)

Action(s)***

< 0.1 mR/hr

No action required

0.1 – 10 mR/hr

Contact radiation safety officer (RSO) or trauma
coordinator (TC)

10 mR/hr – 1 R/hr

Contact RSO or TC

Limit exposure to patient

> 1 R/hr or
OVERRANGE

Contact RSO or TC

Limit exposure to patient

Maintain safe distance from patient, when possible
(greater than 2 feet)

*** NOTE: if Maximum RATE is > 0.1 mR/hr, ensure that the elevated RATE
level is not a result of a recent medical procedure

Tips for Reducing Radiation Exposure

• TIME – minimize time near radiation source

• DISTANCE – maintain maximum practical distance from radiation source

• Moving 2x the distance away from radiation source will decrease exposure

rate by a factor of 4

• SHIELDING – place patient behind concrete or lead barriers if possible
