STARTING PROBLEMS

ENGINE OPERATING PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not Start

Possible Cause

Correction

Check control positions.

Ignition switch STOP (O).

Turn ignition switch ON (I).

Choke not in CLOSED (cold
engine).

Move choke to the CLOSED
position.

Check fuel.

Out of fuel.

Add fuel and press priming bulb
to fill carburetor.

Bad fuel, trimmer stored without
treating or draining gasoline,
refueled with bad gasoline.

Drain fuel tank and carburetor,
refuel with fresh gasoline.

Remove spark plug.

Spark plug faulty, fouled, or has
incorrect gap.

Clean, gap, or replace the
spark plug.

Take trimmer to an
authorized Honda servicing
dealer, or refer to shop
manual.

Fuel filter clogged, carburetor
malfunction, ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.

Replace or repair faulty
components as needed.

Low Power or Engine
Speed Won’t Increase

Possible Cause

Correction

Check air filter.

Filter dirty or clogged.

Check, clean or replace air
filter.

Check fuel filter.

Filter dirty or clogged.

Replace fuel filter.

Check throttle cable.

Out of adjustment, broken, or bent.

Adjust cable, or replace if
necessary.

Check spark arrester.

Screen clogged.

Clean screen.

Check gear case.

Grass wrapped around output shaft
and/or cutting attachment.

Move the ignition switch to the
STOP (O) position and
disconnect the spark plug cap
from the spark plug. Remove
grass from the output shaft and
cutting attachment area.
