To edit specific text by touching the screen:

Touch a location in your text message to move the cursor to that location.
To edit specific text using the onscreen navigation keys:

Use the navigation keys to move your cursor to the required location.

If you make a mistake, press
to reveal the keyboard and press

erase a single character.

Press and hold
to erase an entire word or all entered characters.
