Figure 1 - Pictured is the seal as it would normally be installed (the spring and printing on seal facing up).

Figure 2 - New installation procedure is to rotate the seal 180° along a horizontal line so that the bottom hole

(LH side) in the seal as pictured in figure 1 is now positioned as the top hole (RH side) shown in fig 2. The

spring and printing on the seal is now facing down, towards the shift fork.

IMPORTANT: Before installing a new or rebuilt shift unit, check fit of shift fork to slide block pivot using a

“Fit-up” Card or template (Eaton P/N 128039). These cards are furnished with new units, retrofit and slide block kits.

Instructions are contained on the card.
The seal & spring assembly should now be installed in an inverted position with the spring toward the shift fork

instead of the shift unit.

1. Lubricate shift fork end with clean axle lubricant.
2. Hold the seal as it would be installed normally (printing on seal face up).

NOTE: Because of the carrier’s shift unit box offset location, the position of the seal & spring assembly for

FORWARD TANDEM AXLES is different than that of the REAR TANDEM AXLES and TWO-SPEED

SINGLE AXLES.
3. Rotate the seal 180° along a horizontal line so that the top hole in the seal is now where the bottom

hole was previously.

NOTE: The printing on the seal should be face down and not visible.

4. Push the seal down over the shift fork until the boot face is approximately 1/8” from the shaft bore and

onto the shift unit attachment studs.
5. Operate the shift fork by hand through the entire working range and check for stretching of the seal.

CAUTION If there is any stretching of the seal, it has not been installed at the correct height or has

been installed in the wrong orientation. Refer to figure 7 for a properly installed shift fork seal.

6. Complete the installation of the shift unit as recommended by axle manufacturer. Installation

guidelines for Eaton axle shift components can be found in AXSM-0029 service manual.
