Getting Started

The PRO-Alert 2791 is shipped with the infrared cell and power stick installed. The nickel/metal hydride

batteries in the power stick are not yet charged. To charge them, connect the cord of the AC charger/

adapter to the power jack at the rear of the instrument, and plug the adapter into the appropriate mains

outlet. The battery charging light (rear left side) will flash when the detector is charging, changing to

steady illumination when the power stick is charged. Allow 10 hours for the full charge.
NOTE: You should expect 6 hours of operation from a fully charged power stick. The PRO-Alert 2791

will operate from the AC adapter/charger. Connecting the supplied AC adapter/charger will allow

operation of the detector while the power stick charges.

Using Your PRO-Alert 2791

WARNING

DO NOT OPERATE THIS INSTRUMENT IN THE PRESENCE OF GASOLINE, NATURAL GAS,

PROPANE, OR IN OTHER COMBUSTIBLE ATMOSPHERES.
Using the PRO-Alert 2791 is simple. Press the power (left) switch once to turn the detector ON. The green

ON indicator lamp will illuminate, and the yellow indicator lamps will illuminate from left to right in a running

fashion while the infrared cell warms up (approximately 60 seconds).

When the detector is warmed up and ready for use, the yellow lamps extinguish and you will hear a

steady beeping. The PRO-Alert 2791 is on HIGH (top light is illuminated). Press the sensitivity switch (right)

once to go to MED (both lights are illuminated) and once again to go to LOW (bottom light is illuminated).

The PRO-Alert 2791 provides similar responses to all HFCs and refrigerant blends (i.e., R-134a)
General Information

The PRO-Alert 2791 Electronic Refrigerant Leak Detector is design certified by Intertek to meet SAE

J2791, “Rating Criteria for Electronic Refrigerant Leak Detectors” for R-134a. The following SAE

Recommended Practice applies to this instrument only.

WARNING: Do not use cleaning agents or solvents on or near refrigerant lines. Wipe away dirt or

potential false-triggering chemicals using a dry shop towel or shop air before leak testing. A leak detector

may false-trigger in contaminated atmosphere. Avoid leak testing in severely contaminated areas.

An electronic leak detector may falsely indicate a leak in the presence of certain underhood chemicals.

The table below lists some common underhood chemicals and indicates whether or not they will cause a

false-trigger from the PRO Alert 2791.

Leak test with the engine off.

a. Charge the system with sufficient refrigerant to have a gauge pressure of at least 340 kPa (50 psi)

with the system off. At ambient temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F) leaks may not be measurable

because the pressure may not be reached.

b. Visually trace the entire refrigerant system, and look for signs of air conditioning lubricant leakage,

damage and corrosion on all lines, hoses and components. Check each questionable area with the

detector probe, as well as all fittings, hose-to-line couplings, refrigerant controls, service valves with

caps in place, brazed or welded areas, and areas around attachment points and hold-downs on lines

and components. If looking for an apparently larger leak, check first at the MED or LOW sensitivity

setting.

c. Always follow the refrigerant system around in a continuous path so that no areas of potential leaks

are missed. If a leak is found, always continue to test the remainder of the system.

d. Recheck service valves with caps removed. Blow shop air over service valve to clear immediate area,

and then check with detector on MED sensitivity setting.
