This document provides instructions to install a Brocade VDX 8770-4 switch in a 19 in. EIA rack with a rail-to-rail
depth of 27-31 in.(68.58 to 78.74 cm). The document is organized as follows.

NOTE
A fully populated VDX 8770-4 weighs 86.18 kg (190 lbs). It requires a hydraulic or assisted lift for installation.
Installation guidelines
ATTENTION
To ensure adequate cooling, the left side (as you face the port side) of the VDX 8770-4 must have access to the cool
air aisle. Mount this switch accordingly.
Follow these general installation guidelines:
• Provide a space that is 8 rack units (8U) high, 61.19 cm (24.09 in.) deep, and 43.74 cm (17.22 in.) wide. 1U is
equal to 4.45 cm (1.75 in.).
• To allow the quick removal of all power from the switch, use power sources that are easily accessible and
located near the switch.
• Verify that the additional weight of the switch does not exceed the weight limits of the rack.
• Plan for cable management before installing the switch. Cables can be managed in a variety of ways, such as by
routing cables below the switch, to either side of the switch, through cable channels on the sides of the rack, or
using patch panels. Refer to the Brocade 8770-4 Hardware Reference Manual for specific information.
• Ensure that all equipment installed in the rack is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection. Do not
rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip.
Installing the switch in a four-post rack
Use the following instructions to install the VDX 8770-4 in a rack using the four-post rail kit in a flush mount
configuration.
Time required
Allow approximately one hour to unpack and install a switch.
