Troubleshooting

Error Messages

You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your machine or telephone
line. If this happens, your machine often identifies the problem and displays an
error message. The list below explains the most common error messages.
You can correct most problems by yourself.

If you need additional help, call the Brother fax-back system. (See

IMPORTANT

For technical and operational assistance, you must call the country where you
purchased the MFC. Calls must be made from within that country.

CHANGE DRUM
SOON

The drum unit is near the end of its
life.

Use the drum unit until you have a
print quality problem; then replace
the drum unit with a new one.

The drum counter was not reset.

1. Open the front cover and then

press Clear.

2. Press 1 to reset.

CHECK PAPER
CHECK PAPER #1
CHECK PAPER #2

The machine is out of paper or
paper is not properly loaded in the
paper cassette.

Refill the cassette or remove the
paper and load it again.

CHECK PAPER
SIZE

Your Paper Size setting may not be
set correctly for the paper you are
using (see pages 4-1).

The paper in the cassette does not
match the paper size you set in
Menu, 1, 1. Either load the
appropriate size paper or change the
default setting.

COMM. ERROR

A poor quality phone line caused
communications error.

Try the call again.

CONNECTION FAIL

The fax machine you polled is not in
Polled Waiting mode.

Verify the other party’s polling
setup.
