DSM/TC Tape Processing

DSM/Tape Catalog User’s Guide — 520233-008

3 - 17

Using VOLUME (Tape Name)

This example illustrates an automatic substitution by DSM/TC and a substitution by
the operator. This DEFINE names three scratch tapes for an output tape file:

32> ADD DEFINE =WRITE_LARGE_FILE, CLASS TAPECATALOG,&

32> & USE OUT,&

32> & POOL MIS_TAPES,&

32> & LABELS ANSI,&

32> & FILEID MONTH_END_SUMMARY,&

32> & VOLUME (B01120, B01121, B01122)

In this example, tape B01120 passes verification, and the operator is asked to
mount the tape:

... $ZSVR : 0155 *MC* MOUNT B01120 WITH RING

However, the operator cannot find tape B01120. Because the run instructions
indicate that scratch tape substitution is allowed, the operator uses ALTER
TAPEMOUNT to ask DSM/TC to choose another scratch tape from the
MIS_TAPES pool:

MC> ALTER TAPEMOUNT 155

Subsequently, a new mount message displays on the tape console for message
155:

... $ZSVR : 0155 *MC* MOUNT B01137 WITH RING

The operator mounts tape B01137, and the application begins writing data to it.
When a second tape is needed, a mount message is displayed for B01121, and the
operator mounts that tape on a tape drive. Processing continues.

When a third tape is required, DSM/TC finds that B01122 is unavailable for use.
Because no more tape names remain in the VOLUME list, DSM/TC substitutes a
scratch tape from pool MIS_TAPES. The operator acts on this mount message:

... $ZSVR : 0160 *MC* MOUNT B01143 WITH RING

At the completion of the job, MONTH_END_SUMMARY is written to tapes B01137,
B01121, and B01143 instead of to B01120, B01121, and B01122. The tapes used
for output is easy information to retrieve. In this example, the operator could
execute INFO TAPEFILE MONTH_END_SUMMARY, DETAIL after the job ran to
see that B01137, B01121, and B01143 were used as the first, second, and third
tape for the file.)
