File Protection and Recovery for
Virtual Disks

Recovery strategies for files on virtual disks are similar to recovery strategies for direct
files. You can recover files and entire disk volumes through TMF and through the
BACKUP and RESTORE utilities on both virtual and physical disks. Use of the
appropriate interface depends on user requirements.

SMF also provides an additional capability for file recovery in the event of a disk failure.
If a physical disk becomes unavailable, for example, due to a hardware failure, the files
that reside on that disk become unavailable. This scenario is true whether the disk files
are direct or logically named. However, if the files are logically named, they can be
recovered to another physical disk in the same storage pool as the failed disk.
Because the files are logically named, the new location is not apparent to applications
that refer to these files.

This section addresses how to recover all types of logically named files: that is,
Enscribe or SQL files, protected by TMF or not, including SMF catalog files. However,
note that SMF catalog files are TMF audited files and, therefore, require special
handling when they are recovered, to maintain the integrity of the SMF subsystem. For
more information, see

Protecting SMF Data

Your recovery strategy should start with procedures to protect SMF data. HP highly
recommends that SMF catalogs be given full TMF recovery protection by placing them
on mirrored volumes and taking frequent on line dumps. In addition, normal operations
should include regular backups.

Note the following about TMF dumps:

All file recovery options for direct files are also available for logically named files.

Files are dumped and recovered by using their logical names, not their physical
names.

Dumps for logically named files do not have to be segregated from dumps for
direct files.
