Storage Administrators

Storage Administrators

System administrators and planners, system operators, and application developers all
benefit when working with software tools and interfaces that effectively automate many
storage administration tasks.

System Administrators and Planners

System administrators and planners specify requirements for storage space, data
availability, system performance, and data lifecycle management. They also interact
with operators and application developers to define global storage policies. In addition,
they help determine when storage reorganization is required and try to anticipate and
prevent full disks.

Using SMF and ASM, system administrators and planners can define how to manage
their disks and files and allow the system to automatically take the steps to implement
their storage policies. In addition, system administrators and planners can view the
status of their operations and modify or change storage policies with minimal
administration cost and impact on system availability.

System Operators

System operations staff help enforce storage policies specified by system
administrators and planners. Among other duties, they assist with file retrievals,
perform backups, and support file relocations.

The SMF and ASM subsystems automate some of these basic tasks and provide a set
of tools that can be used when operator intervention is required.

Application Developers

Application developers must be concerned about storage implications whenever their
programs are to perform file operations. For example, the application program must be
responsible for placing permanent and temporary files on a system for best
performance and availability. Also, the application program must:

Handle and manage relocated files

Handle the restoration of archived files

Manage error conditions caused by insufficient disk or file space

The SMF subsystem effectively shifts some of the burden away from the application
program by handling many of the tasks that have been the responsibility of the
application program.
