4 Allocating Storage Resources to
Virtualization Servers

This chapter explains how a server administrator uses Plug-in for Virtualization Server Provisioning to
allocate storage resources to virtualization servers.

Allocating storage resources

P9000 Command View AE Suite storage resources to virtualization servers.

About allocating storage resources

Storage resources are allocated to virtualization servers so that the storage resources can be used by
virtual machines.

By simply specifying the required capacity in Plug-in for Virtualization Server Provisioning, appropriate
volumes are automatically selected or created from the storage resources (the resources in a storage
system managed by P9000 Command View AE Suite) provided by the storage administrator, and
then allocated to virtualization servers.

Two methods for allocating storage resources are available. Choose a method based on factors such
as the users that will use the virtual machines, requests from the application administrator, and how
the virtualization server is planning to be configured.

Datastore
Create a datastore with storage resources allocated to it as the storage destination of the virtual
disks used for virtual machines. Volumes in the storage system are allocated to the virtualization
server, and formatted via VMFS.
