sliding it out of the notch in the rack and carefully pushing it through the

backplane metal. This connector will be used in the upgrade.

Step 7:

Unscrew the backplane metal from the rack. (One screw in the upper corner of

each side - two screws total.) Discard these screws. Replacement screws with

thread locker are provided (ETC Part# HW377) for later use.

Step 8:

Push the backplane toward the back of the rack to free the backplane side tabs

Step 9:

Bend the sides toward the center (out of the sides of the rack).

Step 10: Slide the backplane metal forward in order to allow easier working space while

removing data terminations.

Data Terminations

Step 1:

Unscrew the control data connector (J2) to release it from the backplane.

Transfer beacon wires

Step 2:

Remove wires 5, 6, and 7 from the J2 connector using a precision

flat-blade screwdriver. The wires are the beacon wires and will be

transferred to a new phoenix connector that ships attached to the

back of the new CEM3 backplane.

Step 3:

Carefully cut any tie wraps that secure these wires to other wires in

the J2 connector.

Step 4:

Connect the three wires to the new phoenix connector in the order

shown at right.

Transfer DMX Wires

When transferring wire groups be sure to transfer all wire groups (except those designated

as ETCLink) to the new connectors separately to avoid confusion.

a: In most cases stranded wire has been used for the data terminations. If so,

terminate the DMX wiring to the new connectors (found in the kit) in the same

manner as they were to the old backplane. Double-up the DMXA pass-thru

wiring to the same terminals as the DMXA wires. The DMX pass-thru

connector on the CEM3 backplane will not be used.

b: If Category 5 type cabling has been used for the DMX wire runs, IDC connectors

must be used (ordered separately) for the new terminations. Connect the pass-

thru wires to an IDC connector and land the rack-to-rack jumper connections

on the separate “DMX PASS-THRU” connector (J12) on the new backplane.

DMXA PASS-THRU = Ground - 1, Negative - 2, Positive - 3. DMXB PASS-

THRU = Ground - 4, Negative - 5, Positive - 6.

N o t e :

There are two different connectors available for CEM3 data terminations. One is

for stranded wire as found in Belden 9729 and contains screw terminals (ETC

Part# J3407- included with the kits). The other style is an IDC connector (ETC

Part# J3409 - must be ordered separately) for solid-core wire such as Category 5

cabling.
