Description

In certain environments the performance of the high-gain microphone of
the IP550 telephone can impede optimum speakerphone operation. The
symptoms of this scenario are most often described as not being able to
hear one or the other party in a speakerphone connection. This most often
occurs at sites where the telephone is located in a high-noise environment
or where extreme echo characteristics cause over-sampling of voice
signals (acoustically “hot” environments.)

It is important to note that most applications in fact benefit from the
standard high-gain microphone. The change-out of the microphone should
only be performed when speakerphone operation is noticeably impaired.

This Tech Bulletin describes the process by which the microphone is changed-out in the IP550.

Procedure

1. Disconnect the telephone from all connections (network, PC, power).

2. On a static-free work surface, turn the telephone upside-down and remove

the five screws that secure the bottom housing to the top housing.

3. Store the screws for re-assembly

4. Carefully lift the bottom-housing away from the top-

housing with attention on the microphone connection
that extends from the microphone in the bottom
housing to the circuit board on the top housing… DO
NOT PULL APART QUICKLY as you may damage the
microphone connector on the circuit board.

5.

Carefully disconnect the existing microphone from the top-housing

circuit board by removing the connector on the microphone wires from
the mated connector on the circuit board.

6. Place the bottom-housing on the static-free surface and remove the

microphone and rubber grommet from the bottom-housing
microphone holder by gently pulling the microphone wires… the
microphone and rubber grommet should lift out easily.
