New Shaft Installation:

4. The new shaft requires some assembly and adjustment according to the column to rack

and pinion relationship.

5. Install the lower U-joint # 8050230 on the rack and pinion. Position the u-joint so the bolt

hole lines up with the notch on the pinion shaft.

Install the ¾” DD end of the shaft into the

upper yoke of this U-Joint. The splined end of the shaft will point up towards the column.

6. Install column insert into steering column tube, line up the hole on the insert with the

column tube’s holes and install the column bolt.

7. Install the upper U-joint # 8050440 onto the shaft, so that the U-

joints are 90˚ out of

phase. (see diagram below) to prevent binding. This is called “MIS-PHASING”.

8. Now install the upper U-joint onto the column insert and install U-Joint.

9. The column tube is adjustable and may have to be pulled down or pushed up in order to

line up the lower U-joint bolt hole and the pinion notch, install U-joint pinch bolt and lock
washer.

10. Tighten all U-joint pinch bolts.
