Oil dip stick

NOTE: There are two types of dip sticks that can

be found on MTD engines; a threaded dip
stick that was used on older engines and a
quarter turn dip stick that is used on engines
currently being produced. See Figure 5.1.

To check the oil with a threaded dip stick:

1.

Twist and remove the dip stick from the engine.

2.

Clean the oil off of the tip of the dipstick.

3.

Re-insert the dipstick without threading it in to get
the oil level reading. See Figure 5.2.

4.

The oil level is determined by the lowest point on
the dipstick that is completely covered with oil.

To check the oil with a 1/4 turn dip stick:

1.

Twist and remove the dip stick from the engine.

2.

Clean the oil off of the tip of the dipstick.

3.

Re-insert the dipstick and turn it until it is fully
seated
to get the oil level reading. See Figure 5.3.

4.

The oil level is determined by the lowest point on
the dipstick that is completely covered with oil.
