LANDING GEAR

The Top Flite Giant P-51B is designed for the
Robart #622-5 retracts. Robart #675 will work great
if you prefer to use fixed main landing gear.

SCALE COCKPIT INTERIOR

Should you decide to add a complete cockpit
interior, you may construct your own completely
from scratch, or use parts from the Top Flite Giant
Scale P-51D Cockpit Kit as a starting point.
Although there are differences between the full-size
D and B cockpits, some of the D components are
similar and can be adapted for the B model. Refer
to photos of a full-size P-51B interior for details.

COMPETITION-MINDED

MODELERS

Should you decide to enter your Gold Edition Giant
Scale P-51B in competition (it’s lots of fun and the
runways are usually paved!), contact the AMA for a
rule book that will tell you just about everything you
need to know. The flight requirements are the
same for all classes but, the more advanced the
class you enter, the better the pilots (and builders!)
you will be competing against. The flight
requirements consist of five mandatory maneuvers
and five optional maneuvers. Easy stuff like a
takeoff, fly past, figure eight, landing, etc. You can
even substitute a few of the flight maneuvers with
mechanical options demonstrated on the ground
(such as flaps and/or retracts). Fun Scale is
intended for beginners so there is no formal static
(non-flying) judging. All that is required for documentation
is a photo or other proof that a full-size airplane of
the one you are modeling did exist. In Sportsman
and Expert Scale you must provide documentation
including three-view drawings and photos. If you’ve
ever thought about trying a competition, never let
your fear of intimidation stop you. The “scale guys”
are really laid back and are very helpful to
beginners.

While your model is under construction, refer to
your scale documentation frequently. In fact, we
recommend you get your documentation package
together early–even before you begin construction
if possible. Whatever features, lines, shapes are
visible on the subject in your documentation,
should be visible in your model as well. In other
words, build your model to look like the full-size
subject in your photos and three views! This is not
important for Fun Scale, but pertains mostly to
Sportsman and Expert scale builders. Scale
documentation packages are available from
sources such as

Scale Model Research.
