OPEN CONNECTION

For the network interface, the Paging Encoder detects when a new socket connection occurs and outputs the 220 SNPP
Gateway Ready
response. For the serial port interface, the Paging Encoder detects when the serial port is opened by
the host system by monitoring the RTS signal. When RTS is asserted, the Paging Encoder outputs the 220 SNPP
Gateway Ready<CR><LF>
response. The server (v9E paging encoder) is now ready to accept paging requests.

PAGER ID

The client (typically nurse call system) will output PAGE NNNNNNN<CR><LF>, where NNNNNNN is a variable length
value representing a Pager ID. The v9E encoder will compare the Pager ID value to its pager database or the Extended
Pager ID encoding rules to determine if the Pager ID value is acceptable. If the Pager ID value is acceptable, the v9E
encoder will output 250 Pager ID Accepted<CR><LF>. If the Pager ID value is unacceptable, the v9E encoder will
output 550 Error, Invalid Pager ID<CR><LF>. The PAGE request can be tried multiple times by the SNPP client.

MESSAGE

Once a 250 Pager ID Accepted response is detected by the client, it should output a message request, of the form MESS
XXXXX…XXX<CR><LF>
, where XXXXX…XXX represents a message of up to approximately 244 characters in length.
The v9E encoder should respond to a message request with 250 Message OK<CR><LF>

SEND MESSAGE

Once a 250 Message OK response is detected by the client, it should output SEND<CR><LF>. The v9E encoder will
begin transmitting the message and replying with 250 Message Sent Okay<CR><LF> immediately upon detecting the
SEND command before it detects the <CR><LF> suffix.

PAGING SESSION LOGOUT

Once a 250 Message Sent Okay response is detected by the client, the client can choose to initiate another paging
request by outputting PAGE NNNNNNN<CR><LF>, or the client can choose to end the paging session by outputting
QUIT<CR><LF>. If a pager ID is detected by the v9E paging encoder, it will respond according to the Pager ID section
above. If a QUIT command is detected, the v9E paging encoder will output 221 OK, Goodbye<CR><LF>. At that point,
the client can close the network socket connection, if a network connection is being used. If a serial port is being used, the
client can choose to close the serial port, or, if the client does not need to see the v9E paging encoder’s Open Connection
response, the client can leave the serial port open and output a Pager ID request at any time to initiate the next cycle of
communications.
