HPI Based Shelf Management

The shelf management is based on an open industry standard, called Hardware Platform
Interface (HPI). HPI is provided by the service availability forum (SAF).

HPI provides a platform independent interface to platform specific services.

A manageable shelf component is identified by the HPI as a unique resource in the system. Each
resource is modeled as a collection of resource data records (RDR) which contain information
about the controls, sensors, inventory data, and watchdog timers. Via this data the user can
monitor and control the state of the system.

The following data is used by the shelf management:

Shelf FRU information
The shelf FRU information defines the shelf topology, for example type and number of
slots, backplane topology.

FRU inventory data
The FRU inventory data consists of the board info area, the product info area, and the multi
record area.

Board info area
It consists of the manufacturer name, manufacturing date, the board product name,
the board serial number, and the board part number.

Product info area
It consists of the manufacturer name, manufacturing date, the product name, the
product serial number, and the product part number.

Multi record area
It describes AdvancedTCA inventory data like point-to-point connectivity and the user
info area.
