Automating Your System Using the CONTROL OUT

• The CONTROL OUT supplies a constant 12V DC (maximum of a 200mA draw) when any of the rooms

are on. A Niles voltage activated power strip can be triggered by this voltage.

• When an All Off command is received the MRZ-6 will turn off the 12V DC after a 3 second delay.

Distributing System-Wide Commands Using the UART Connector

• The UART connector distributes the ALL ON and ALL OFF commands to all MRZ-6’s in the system by con-

necting in parallel using two-conductor 20 gauge cable. Connect pin one to pin one and pin two to pin two.
Wiring runs should not exceed three feet in length.

Powering Your MRZ-6

• The MRZ-6 is powered by plugging the 16V AC, 1.8 amp wall adapter (included) into the POWER jack.

Programming and Automating Your System

Introduction

The MRZ-6 is capable of learning the basic commands for your preamp/receiver, and issuing them in an intelligent
macro or sequence. This occurs when either the “CD” or the “Tuner” button is pressed on an RP-9 keypad or the Niles
“CD” or “Tuner” IR command is issued by a learning remote control and received by a sensor attached to an MRZ-6.
Additionally, special Niles IR commands are built into the MRZ-6 which enable automation systems and learning remote
controls to control the MRZ-6 in very specific ways. In order to take advantage of all of these features, you must syn-
chronize the preamp/receiver, teach the MRZ-6 the six or seven IR commands to control the Preamp/receiver, and then
teach any learning remote controls or IntelliPads the special Niles automation IR codes.

Synchronizing the Preamp/Receiver

The MRZ-6 must “know” whether the preamp/receiver is
on or off so that it can correctly decide when to issue the
preamp/receiver’s “power” command. Typically, you
synchronize the preamp/receiver to the MRZ-6 by con-
necting a 12V DC wall adapter to the preamp/receiver’s
switched outlet, then connecting the 12V DC output to
the MRZ-6 SYNC input. See Figure 26. Now, whenever
the preamp/receiver is on, the MRZ-6 detects 12V DC at
the sync connector; likewise, when the preamp/receiver
is off, the MRZ-6 detects nothing at the sync connector.
This enables the MRZ-6 to make intelligent choices. For
example, if you press the CD button, the MRZ-6 checks the
sync port, sees that the preamp/receiver is already on, so it makes the intelligent decision; it does not issue the power
command, it simply reissues the CD input command and the CD play command. Every time the end user issues a com-
mand via remote or keypad, the MRZ-6 will synchronize the preamp/receiver as necessary.
