Menu Guide—The Set-Up Menu

Making Effective Use of Memory:
The Image Size & Quality Menu

Together, image quality and size determine how much space each
picture occupies on the memory card. This in turn determines the total
number of pictures that can be stored. To get an idea of how different
settings for image size and quality affect the number of images that
can be stored on a memory card, view the following table, which
shows the approximate number of pictures that can be stored on 16
MB, 64 MB, and 128 MB cards at different combinations of image size
and quality.

Image Quality

To reduce the amount of memory that each shot
occupies, pictures taken at settings other than HI
are compressed as they are saved to the memory
card. Compression selectively reduces the quality
of the image; the more the picture is compressed,
the more noticeable this loss of quality is likely to
be. The actual effect depends on the size of the
picture when printed or displayed and on the type of subject.

You can control the amount of compression using the image quality sub-menu.
Image quality settings can be accessed from the SET-UP menu and the “Image Size
& Quality” sub-menu in the

å shooting menu (p. 96). Changes to image quality in

any of these menus apply to all modes. Note, however, that image quality setting of
“HI” cannot be selected with the SETUP menu and “HI” becomes “FINE” in

a

and SCENE modes, reverting to “HI” when the mode dial is turn to

å.
