3. Starting the Generator

After you have completed the pre-start checklist procedures, you are ready to start the
generator.

Start engine

Start the engine with the guard in place.

Before starting, confirm there are no loads connected to the generator’s
outlets.

Follow the instructions provided in your engine manual for starting the
engine.

Check output
voltage without
load

Check output voltage before connecting loads to the generator.

WARNING:
The generator must be run at the correct speed in order to produce the
proper electrical voltage and frequency. Failure to do so could result
in damage to equipment powered by the generator and possible injury
to the individual.

1. Allow running generator to warm up for five minutes. Do not

connect any loads.

2. Use the generator’s voltmeter to check output voltage.

The voltmeter’s needle should be at or above the black line within the
green area. (Note: The needle should stay in the green area during all
load conditions.)

If the output voltage is NOT within the specified range:

1) Adjust the engine speed if possible.

2) If that doesn’t work, re-verify that:

a) Your engine’s rated horsepower meets the minimum

requirement,

b) Your sheave ratio is correct, and
c) The belts (or couplings) are not loose (squeaking, visibly

slipping).

3) If you are still not able to achieve acceptable output voltage, there

is a problem with the engine or the generator. Refer to your
engine’s owner’s manual for troubleshooting. If it appears that
the generator itself is the problem,
call NorthStar Product Support
@ 1-800-270-0810.
