general installation practices

installation instructions

1.

remove engine cover “dog house.” remove

air filter cover. remove rubber air inlet hose

assembly from air filter housing and throttle body

on engine. cover throttle opening to prevent

foreign objects from entering engine.

2.

remove sparkplug wires from sparkplugs.

label wires for reinstallation if not familiar

with firing order. lay sparkplug wires away from

exhaust manifolds. now remove sparkplugs from

engine.

3.

remove muffler and tailpipes from vehicle.

if this assembly extends over the rear axle,

cutting off the tailpipes will allow the muffler/

tailpipe assembly to be removed more quickly.

heat from a torch will most likely be required to

separate slip joints. to remove the exhaust system

from the rubber hangers, squirt some wd-40,

silicone spray or similar lubricant onto the lower

end of the rubber hangers, where the hanger rod

protrudes through the rubber, then use a pry bar

to pop the rubber hangers off the rod.

4.

remove the intermediate pipe from between

the muffler and catalytic converter. this will

be a short stub adapter on short wheelbase

models, or a pipe, or pipe with hanger on longer

wheelbase models. heat the catalytic converter

slip joint as required to remove the pipe.

5.

disconnect the oxygen sensor plug where

oxygen sensor wires join the wire loom (not

at the oxygen sensor). carefully unscrew the

oxygen sensor from the exhaust y-pipe. do not

use any penetrating oil or lubricants to assist with

unscrewing the oxygen sensor, as chemicals can

permanently damage the sensor.

6.

separate the catalytic converter from the

y-pipe assembly and the air injection

tubing. use heat at slip joints as required. remove

y-pipe assembly by unbolting flanges at exhaust

manifolds.

7.

on vehicle models with air injection into the

exhaust manifolds, unbolt the air injection

tube from the rear of the right exhaust manifold.

penetrating oil may be necessary for bolt removal.

8.

unbolt dipstick tube from left exhaust

manifold. disconnect air injection tube (if

equipped) and egr tube from fittings on rear and

bottom of left exhaust manifold. use penetrating

oil as required.

NOTE: Unscrew tubing nut from fittings on exhaust
manifold, do not attempt to remove the adapter fittings
from the manifold. In extreme cases, heat from a torch
may be required to loosen the tube nuts. Heat the nut
to a dull red color, let it cool, then spray the nut with
penetrating oil and attempt to loosen the tube nut. DO

for ease of installation and trouble-free

operation of your banks powerpack, please

read this entire 14-page instruction package

before starting any work. (if any pages are

missing from this package, please call gale banks

engineering immediately for a replacement.) become

thoroughly familiar with all components and phases of

the installation and determine what additional tools or

materials you may need to complete the installation.

inspect all components supplied for any foreign

material that may have entered during shipping

and handling.

WARNING:

whatever methods are used

to elevate the vehicle must be of sufficient

capacity for the vehicle weight involved. NEVER

work

under any vehicle supported only by a jack of

any kind.

DO NOT USE

concrete blocks or other

masonry items that may collapse under the

vehicle weight.

pay particular attention to the routing of any

wires. keep them away from exhaust heat,

moving parts and sharp edges that may cause cuts or

other damage. route or tie wires away from critical

areas as required. keep all wires a minimum of 6”

from hot exhaust parts, 8” or more is recommended

whenever possible.

right-hand and left-hand designations refer to

the driver’s right or left, as seated in the vehicle,

(i.e.: right-hand refers to the passenger side of the

vehicle, unless noted otherwise.)

the banks motorhome powerpack, is designed

to fit class-c 460 ford chassis platform engine/

chassis combinations. because of different equipment

layouts used by various coach builders, some

accessories and components may have to be relocated

to accommodate the air intake components of the

banks powerpack, or the powerpack components may

need to be modified.
