10. On the Start menu point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, then point to Configuration
Tools and click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. The SQL Server 2005 Surface Area
Configuration window is displayed.
11. Click Surface Area Configuration for Features. The Surface Area Configuration for Features
dialogue box is displayed.
12. Click xp_cmdshell. The display changes.
13. Select the Enable xp_cmdshell check box.
14. Click Apply.
15. Click OK to return to the SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration window.
16. If the SQL server is installed on a remote PC click Surface Area Configuration for Services and
Connections. The Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections dialogue box is displayed.
17. Under 'Database Engine' click Remote Connections.
18. Ensure that the Local and remote connections, and the Using both TCP/IP and named pipes options are
selected.
19. Click Apply.
20. Click SQL Server Browser.
21. Ensure that Automatic is selected in the Startup type box.
22. Click Apply.
