2 Getting started with SPM

Installing SPM

SPM is installed as part of the HP Matrix OE solution. You must have Microsoft® .NET 4.0 installed
on the Central Management Server to use the SPM software. See

HP Insight Management Installation

and Configuration Guide

for more information.

Upgrading from SPM v1.x

At the end of the SPM v2 installation, the SPM catalog will be automatically upgraded if SPM v1
was previously installed.

If upgrading goes well, all v1 resources including storage arrays, volumes, networks and storage
services will be translated into the new v2 catalog. The corresponding v2 arrays, v2 pools and v2
volumes will be automatically imported. V2 storage services will be automatically created and
activated.

Resources that were unmanaged in v1 will remain unmanaged in v2. The upgrade utility will not
attempt to transform unmanaged v1 resources (e.g. an unmanaged Brocade network) into managed
v2 resources. This is because the v1 catalog does not contain the credentials to manage unmanaged
resources. It will be up to the end user to modify the resources to make them manageable.

NOTE:

In v1, an endpoint was allowed to be specified in multiple SANs. In v2, an endpoint can be
specified in only one SAN. The upgrade utility will keep each v1 endpoint that was specified
in multiple SANs in one randomly chosen SAN and only one.

The resources that could not be reached (offline) during the upgrade will be automatically
transformed into unmanaged resources. It will be up to the end user to modify the resources
to make them manageable again.

The upgrade utility will try to re-activate the storage services (called storage profiles in v1). It is
possible that some storage services will not be resourced. It is also possible that some of the services
will be resourced but non conformant. It will be up to the end user to modify these services to make
them resourced and conformant.

NOTE:

All upgraded resources will belong to the Matrix Security Group.

All upgraded storage services will use the HP Matrix Default Storage Template.

The upgrade process may take a long time, possibly tens of minutes during which the GUI
will not be usable.

Setting up and configuring SPM to communicate with arrays and networks

Before using SPM, determine what storage resources (arrays and networks) will be made available
to SPM and perform installation and configuration of the software components that will allow SPM
to talk to those resources. To understand the resources for which SPM provides automated support,
see

SPM environment
