Controlling power costs

Power costs continue to climb in the data center. You can determine the power used by each
system, and the relative performance of the system, to identify systems that are the least energy
efficient to use, and good candidates for an upgrade.

Table 12 Predefined analysis queries: Finding energy inefficient systems

Description

Query name

Physical servers that have little to no resource utilization over the
selected interval and use a significant amount of power.

Consider removing these systems or converting them to VMs.

Low usage hardware and high power

Finding systems with configuration issues

The following predefined queries locate systems with configuration issues.

Table 13 Predefined analysis queries: Finding systems with configuration issues

Description

Query name

These systems are missing any power calibration. Power calibrations
are generally collected from iLO. Confirm that Insight Power
Manager is configured correctly. The power calibration can also
be set manually.

Missing power calibration

These systems are up, yet have no valid CPU readings. The system
may have configuration errors preventing data collection. Look at
the events for these systems for an indication of why data collection
is failing.

No data collected in the interval

Creating custom analysis queries

You can create a custom query in several ways:

By editing a predefined query and saving it under a new name.

By editing a custom query and saving it under a new name.

By creating a new custom query using the Actions

→New menu item.

Prerequisites

To create a new analysis query:

You must be logged in to Matrix OE.

You must be authorized to use Capacity Advisor on at least one managed system.

Capacity Advisor data must have been collected and analyzed.
