Volume management area

VOLSER

The label of a volume assigned by the mainframe host.

volume (vol or
VOL)

A collective name for the logical devices (LDEVs) and logical units (LUs) that are
created in a storage system.
A logical device (LDEV), or a set of LDEVs in the case of LUSE, that has been
defined to one or more hosts as a single data storage unit. A mainframe volume
is called a logical volume image (LVI), and an open systems volume is called a
logical unit (LU).

World wide name. A unique identifier used in storage technologies. It is typically
a node name that is a 64-bit address assigned to HBAs (host bus adapters) or
storage system ports that define the endpoints of a fibre-channel connection
between storage and hosts for purposes of volume I/O.
